Through SPSG’s charter membership in OS, students may choose to enroll in courses offered through the consortium’s expansive options. Taught by exceptional faculty from some of the nation’s most prestigious girls schools, and closely mentored by SPSG faculty, students have completed such OSH courses as Introduction to Engineering, AP Human Geography, and Introduction to iOS App Development.
“Independent schools are uniquely positioned to explore new ways to engage students through online learning. Pursuing this opportunity helps schools shift from talking about 21st Century skills to implementing their vision. Online learning provides an opportunity to deepen and broaden student learning choices, and to fully prepare students for the experience of college.” –National Association of Independent Schools, Online Learning: A Continuum of Opportunity
Online education is rapidly becoming a cornerstone of a 21st century educational experience. By partnering with One Schoolhouse (OS), a membership-based consortium, SPSG is able to expand its course offerings and provide students access to a wide range of online options. Our membership allows students to pursue a passion, exchange ideas with students from girls’ schools across the nation, and develop independent study habits, thus preparing them for leadership in today’s complex world.
Mission Statement and Guiding Principles
The One Schoolhouse provides an exceptional educational experience by connecting girls worldwide through relevant and engaging coursework in a dynamic online learning community. OS classes are built on four pillars:
- Connection: Emphasize connection among participants
- Collaboration: Incorporate collaboration into the learning experience
- Creativity: Inspire and reward creativity
- Application: Engage in real-world problems and applications while having students probe the social and ethical dynamics that define and stretch our global society
Taking a Class with One Schoolhouse
OS classes are taught by exceptional faculty members from all- girls’ independent schools who have been trained to engage girls in a collaborative, rigorous, and relevant online experience, similar in many ways to our face-to-face classrooms. OS teachers are readily accessible through Skype, email, and phone, and they form meaningful and supportive relationships with their students.
SPSG students have enjoyed OS courses such as computer programming, AP US Government, AP Music Theory, and Latin. SPSG currently fully funds the annual enrollment of over 10 students in OS courses. OS classes appear on the SPSG transcript and are counted towards graduation requirements. Students may apply to take an OS class in the spring of each academic year. A liaison at SPSG meets regularly with our OS students and serves as an additional resource for SPSG/OS parents to facilitate communication and ensure the success of our students.
