Winter Season Wrap-Up

Erin Howland, Athletic Director

The 2016-17 winter season has come to a close. Thanks to our committed student athletes, awesome coaches, tremendously supportive parents and Gator fans; our teams experienced great success.

Congratulations to Coach Gill on winning consecutive IAAM Championships in fall soccer and winter soccer. Congratulations as well to the Athletic Booster Club for their enthusiasm and outstanding commitment of SPSG Athletics. The club was highlighted in a recent publication of The Epistle. One student commented that "the club is doing a great job of supporting athletes."

The students also love the concept of the Game of the Week that the booster club supports and promotes. One student remarked, "it's so much fun to show support this way for the teams and it is also fun when teachers and coaches join in."

So calling all Gator fans near and far! Come check out our Gators in action this spring. They are so fun to watch and continue to inspire me to work hard every day to build an even better Gator athletic program.

Varsity Indoor Soccer Wins IAAM Championship

Just like our fall season, the Varsity Indoor Soccer team ended its season with a championship victory. Overall, the team had a record of 7-2-1 and scored a total of 52 goals. In the semi-final game the Gators defeated St. Tim's 5-2, building momentum for the championship game versus Park. The previous two games versus Park resulted in a tie and a loss, so SPSG had some unfinished business going into the championship.

Our 2-0 lead soon became 2-2 as Park tied it up. With a goal in the final minute of the game, the Gators held strong to bring home a 3-2 win and a championship trophy. This season we had three players named to the IAAM B Conference Soccer Team, senior Mary Claire Gaines, junior Darby Welsh, and sophomore Zari Hayes. Back to back championships mark a significant milestone for the soccer program, which hopes to continue next year. We thank the seniors for their contributions to the indoor soccer program and we will miss them next year!

Our team was comprised of seven 8th graders and three 7th graders. Our only loss was to a tough McDonogh team where we played with only seven players. The girls had a great season and in numerous games all ten players contributed points. If there was a game where a player didn't score, she contributed in other ways by playing great defense, grabbing a rebound or making a great pass to her teammate to score.

Our last game of the season was by far the best one as we avenged our one loss to a strong McDonogh team. The girls were able to implement plays out of a time out and learned quickly that playing tough defense was the key to scoring offensively. We will miss our 8th graders and wish them the best next year!

The B basketball team's season was a roller coaster ride with both highs and lows. The team started the season 0-2 and were having trouble keeping up with opponents, but rebounded right before winter break and quickly improved to .500 on the season.

Highlights for the season include a 26-0 win on the road and a season finale that included multiple lead changes and an overtime period which saw both teams exchanging the lead but ended in a tie. The team goals of working hard and improving each and every day were certainly accomplished by this great group of girls.

Despite not winning a game this season, the girls learned lessons that went far beyond the game of basketball. The girls never lost their enthusiasm and learned the true meaning of the words "teamwork and determination."

The girls forged true friendships, had fun while playing, improved their basketball skills, and enhanced their understanding of the game while learning to put forth effort for the benefit of the team. Sounds like a successful season to us! Great job, girls!

Congratulations to our Middle School squash team and Upper School ice hockey club for a great season! Thank you to coaches Richard Millman and Pat Millman for their support of the Middle School squash team, and to Julia Rodricks for her support of the Upper School ice hockey club.

After a slow start that included two losses, the season started to take shape. The team came together after winter break and we were dominant in our wins and competitive in our losses. The team made great strides this season and exhibited great sportsmanship throughout the season. The girls ended the season with a great feeling of accomplishment and we look forward to next season.

Overall Record:
11-4; 8-2 league

The JV hoops squad started strong and finished even stronger. They played as one cohesive unit and truly elevated their level of play for each other. Their will to win and sense of teamwork was never more apparent than in their road game at IND where they faced a team with a significant advantage and held on for the win in a highly emotional environment. Congratulations to the squad for a tremendous season.

The varsity basketball team gained some ground this season going from a four win, last place finish in the IAAM B Conference last year, to an eleven win, 7th place finish this year. The roster was infused with five freshmen who brought energy, athleticism, and experience to the lineup. The highlight of the season was a trip to the Carolina Invitational, where SPSG took third place in its bracket and had both Destiny Ryles and Alex Sawyers named to the All-Tournament Team.

SPSG's program is on the rise, with a very successful JV season and the loss of only two seniors, the Gators are poised to make a serious run next year. Congratulations to Destiny Ryles who earned IAAM All-Conference honors this season.

4th Place Team: IAAM B Conference Championship Meet

This year marks the third year that SPSG has fielded a winter indoor track and field team. The 2016-17 team was by far the largest and most successful of our past indoor teams as 23 Gators tested their skills in the sprints, long and middle distance runs, jumps, throws, hurdles, and relay events. The highlight of the season came in late January at the highly competitive IAAM Indoor Track and Field Championship meet. The Gators placed individuals and relay teams in 10 of the 15 contested events, scoring 58 team points which earned them a 4th place overall finish in the IAAM B Conference.

The team was led by our three All-Conference athletes and individual event champions, junior Anastasia Swetz (1st place: 500m dash, 3rd place: 4x400m relay, 4th place: 4x200m relay, 7th place: triple jump), junior Maddy Riedel (1st place: pole vault), and junior Hannah Stanley (1st place: 1600m run, 3rd place: 800m run). As the winter season and indoor season is a warm up for our spring and outdoor season, the Gators are off to a great start and are determined to compete for the overall team championship at the B Conference Track & Field Championship Meet in May.

Varsity Swimming

The Gators had a successful swim season finishing 3rd in the tough IAAM B Conference Championships and winning six of their last eight regular season dual meets. Congratulations also to sophomore Elizabeth Fry for winning the 200 IM and the 100 Butterfly and being named to the IAAM B Conference Team!

"Outside the Lines"

A senior parent's perspective on her daughter's athletic journey
at St. Paul's School for Girls

Written by: Kathy & Bobby Gaines, P'17

Mary Claire grew as a person as well as an athlete while participating on a variety of teams for St. Paul's School for Girls. As a freshman, she participated in sports primarily for social reasons, concentrating on both indoor and outdoor soccer and badminton. The soccer coaching staff helped Mary Claire grow; developing her soccer IQ and skills to enhance her natural athletic ability and speed. She learned the value of teamwork, dedication, and accountability. The coaches created a reinforcement development cycle; the more they believed in her, the more her self confidence grew and the more effective she became as a player.

Teamwork has helped Mary Claire develop many close and long-lasting friendships that extend well beyond the field and her academic class. She has gained an appreciation for fitness, exercise, and working with others to achieve a goal – a goal that culminated with IAAM Championships in both outdoor and indoor soccer her senior year. Thank you for these opportunities and fond memories.
