Alumna Jala Tucker '17 Gives Inspiring Prayers Talk on King's Vision Day

Today we celebrate King's Vision Day, SPSG's annual celebration of the legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. We were thrilled to welcome alumna Jala Tucker '17 back to campus as our Prayers speaker to kick off the day of reflection and discussion. Now a junior at Hampton University and cofounder of Project HCBU, a non-profit which specializes in giving students advice on college admissions, Jala shared an inspiring Prayers talk with the community, urging all students to push aside self-doubt and manifest their own dreams. "You are the foundation of your own success," shared Jala. "I want you all to be bold, be excellent, be great, and most of all, I want you all to take up space. As women, we tend to think that we're better off living in the shadows or our presence doesn't need to be big. I challenge you all to take up every space you walk in. When you walk through this gymnasium doors, in your classrooms, even in your own homes, walk with fearlessness and assurance of who you are."

After Prayers, both SPSG and SP pause from classes as a community and engage in thoughtful discussions around equity and social justice. Upper school students engage in a coordinated film festival with SP, featuring films and series including "The Hate U Give," "When They See Us," and "Green Book," and those films are used as a catalyst for discussion around various social justice topics presented in the movie.

For the first time, both middle schools are also participating in coordinated King's Vision Day activities, coming together for opening and closing assemblies and engaging in discussions around middle school specific films such as "Ruby Bridges," "42," and "Selma."

This afternoon, all students will enjoy a performance from WombWork Productions, Inc.
