On Friday, May 3, SPSG welcomed alumna Dr. Bronwyn Lewis Friscia '04 to speak at Alumnae Prayers and kick off Green & White Weekend 2019. As a former SGA President during her time at SPSG, Dr. Friscia once again took the podium to speak to the student body, faculty and staff, and fellow alumnae about the incredible opportunity at SPSG to develop one's skills and strengths surrounded and supported by a community of women, as well as the importance of striving to become creators, rather than consumers, in our greater world.
Currently, Dr. Friscia is an admissions consultant, data scientist, and political scientist based in Venice Beach, California. She grew up in Lutherville, Maryland and spent 13 years on the St. Paul's campus after starting at the Lower School at age five. Her fondest SPSG memories include spending long weekends putting together The Epistle, winning back-to-back volleyball championships, and participating in every possible Poetry Recitation Contest. She later studied political science at Duke University, taught writing to high schoolers in London for two years as a Colet Fellow, and completed a Master's at The London School of Economics before completing her combined PhD in Political Science and Master's in Statistics at UCLA. Her dissertation argued that climate politics could become more tractable if we measured emissions responsibility in consumption rather than production terms, and she left academia to pursue a career that would give her more time to write about these ideas for a popular audience. Dr. Friscia is now the co-owner and head of the writing support team at Syzygy Global Education, an admissions consulting firm that supports students through the college application process, and she advises DC-based data science education start-up Data Society on how to use partnerships in higher education to bring affordable access to data science training to under-skilled communities. In her free time, she is turning her dissertation into a solution-oriented book about climate politics.
Watch her remarks below. SPSG is grateful to have Dr. Friscia back on campus as she celebrates her 15th reunion!
