In the Episcopal Tradition
SPSG is a school in the Episcopal tradition. Central to this is the belief that each person is a child of God, and, as such, each person in our community is accepted for her/his unique talents and abilities.
Our community is inclusive of and celebrates other faiths in philosophy and practice. We accept and support diversity in all its forms. As written in our mission statement, we encourage "respect, integrity, creativity, and spiritual growth."
We are not a parish school, but we are affiliated with Old St. Paul’s Church in downtown Baltimore. Our roots trace back to 1799 when parishioners from OSP founded a school for poor or orphaned girls where the charge was to teach reading and writing, not just domestic skills.
We are served by a chaplain who practices a liturgy common to the Episcopal Church, which includes a weekly, school-wide chapel, weekly communion for those who wish to participate, an Ash Wednesday service, and Lessons and Carols, a beautiful Christmas service on the last day before the holiday break. Religious studies, including ethics and philosophy, are a respected part of our academic curriculum.
As a school in the Episcopal tradition, SPSG encourages all members of its community to embrace the spiritual component of their life experience and to grow stronger in their own faiths.
